First, find the steam generator iron that interests you:

The top, user-rated irons are on the left beginning with the Philips GC8635.

Then you can look down the columns to locate the functions that you need in a pressurised steam iron.

We reckon you want to quickly home in in the best irons – so we feature here the top 10 steam generator irons.

Notes on Features & Functions Column

Here are a few clarifications for the compare steam generator irons table:

Overall Users' Satisfaction Rating
To date we’ve surveyed 1,399 users of pressurised steam irons in order to find out which are the best models in the UK and why.

One question we asked was: “You’ve lived with your iron now for 6 or more weeks. Thinking about how much you paid and your experience to date, how would you rate your iron overall out of 10?

We combined all marks for a given model to find the overall users rating (yOUR rating). 9 or more suggests a clothes iron that delivers good results, is reliable and represents good value for money.

A rating of 7 or less suggests a model has shortcomings in performance or reliability and has been judged – by users – to be poor value for money.

Family Ironing
An iron like the Tefal GV8461 suits the needs of a busy family with a big ironing pile. It delivers 2-3 times more steam than a regular iron. Plus it has a reservoir that probably won’t need to be refilled during your ironing session.

Professional Ironing
The Philips GC9230 has additional functions that can benefit both families and suit a professional iron service – like a boost of steam for creases in heavy fabric and quick and easy self-cleaning of the iron soleplate and de-scaling of the water tank.

Energy Saving Features
Manufacturers have begun adding an ECO setting (eg the Tefal GV9461), claiming this will save you money by using less power.

Probably a more practical function is an auto-cut-off that puts an iron into hibernation if it isn’t moved for a period of time (between 10-30 minutes).

Steams at - Continuous Steam Output
This is the measure of how much wrinkle smoothing and crease removing power an iron possesses. It’s measured in “grams of steam per minute”.

What that means for you: The more steam produced the quicker it penetrates fabric, relaxes it and enables the iron to smooth away wrinkles and creases in one pass.

Steam Boost Button
Sometimes, if a garment is bone dry or of heavy material you could benefit from a steam boost facility. It really pushes the steam into the fabric.

But remember these irons – on continuous steam – already produce 2-3 times the steam of any ordinary iron.

Optimal Temperature Maintenance
All the irons in the top 10 use the familiar dial heat/steam control * - ** - *** for different garment fabrics.

Not so the Philips GC8620/02. This has a sensor which, it is claimed, puts an end to sorting fabrics. You’ll pay for the privilege. And as you can see this is a very good iron, but – based on user satisfaction - only came 10th in our survey.

Water Tank/Top up on Demand
The bigger the water tank the longer you can iron without a refill. The most convenient irons have detachable reservoirs you can remove while the iron is switched on and pressurised.

That’s very convenient if the iron base is on the floor.

Continuous Steam Time
All the irons surveyed produce steam continuously on demand by either setting the dial and/or pressing a button.

Manufacturers suggest some very optimistic times for their iron’s water reservoir to run dry and out of steam.

In the real world, we’ve taken a reasonable average of steam used per 100ml of water at different temperatures (grams/minute), plus the experience of our survey responders.

Doubles
Means you can double the time because you often put the iron down in order to select a new garment or adjust it on the ironing board.

Vertical Steam
You can use the iron vertically to steam garments on a clothes hanger or perhaps curtains.

Easy Glide Sole-Plate
Iron sole-plates are made of polished stainless steel on cheaper models.

All the irons in our survey have stainless steel sole-plates enamelled with a ceramic coating. That makes them ultra-slippery.

Steam in Tip
All of the irons in our survey have this feature. It’s very useful for ironing round buttons, shirt collars and for fiddly work like pleats.

Some cheap irons (not featured here) don’t have this facility.

Water Spray
Because steam generator irons produce so much steam, most don’t have this facility. Their steam dampens and relaxes fabric at the same instant as the iron passes over.

Tap Water
It’s convenient to fill the iron reservoir with tap water. The manufacturer of the Morphy Richards 42244 – a fine iron – recommends you use distilled water which is a bit of added expense and a faff.

Anti-scale System
If you live in a hard water area you’ll know about lime-scale. This sticks to heating elements reducing efficiency, clogs up steam holes in the sole-plate and even deposits annoying powder marks on clothes.

An anti-scale system is a filter between the water tank and the boiler. That means scale is prevented from getting into the mechanism of the iron.

Philips has the most convenient system – special tablets that absorb the lime and don’t need replacing. Next are Tefal and Bosch with a removable, re-useable filter. Morphy Richards has a cartridge filter, but you need to replace the filter from time to time.

Anti-scale system for sole-plate
A few irons have this facility, eg Philips GC7420. You hold the iron part over the sink, select the self-clean setting and steam/water flushes the sole-plate.

Anti-Browning
Brown residue on an iron sole-plate comes from minute man-made fibres that are melted and stick to the sole-plate reducing its slipperiness.

All of the irons we surveyed have a ceramic coated sole-plate resistant to browning (and easier to clean, too). The The Tefal Gv9461 has has an additional pyro setting to harmlessly vaporise browning without odour.

Rinse Boiler
A simple rinses and wipe – not a major undertaking.
