8 Things You Should Look for in the Best PC Headsets

You’ll know what headphones look like, but what are the 8 talking and listening qualities to look for in the top 10 PC & console headsets:

• Corded or cordless connection
• Simplicity: Customisable plug and play set-up
• Noise cancelling microphone
• In-line mute
• Stereo sound
• Comfortable, adjustable headphones/mic
• USB and/or 3.5mm jack connection
• Compatible with PCs, Macs, Tablets & Games Consoles, too

Here’s the reason why you should ask these 8 key buying questions:

Corded or cordless connection

In our survey, first & second generation cordless (wireless) headphones just didn’t win the hearts and minds of our responders. Connectivity and battery life are the main problems. Sorry, this year we can’t bring you any cordless user recommendations.

All the top computer headsets in our survey are cordless models.

Simplicity: Customisable plug and play set-up

The best models are simple to operate, basically you take them out of the box and plug them into the relevant socket in your PC (mac), Tablet or games console (Wii, Xbox or PS3) and they provide the audio straight into your ears.

If you (or a fellow user) have made changes from the base set-up of the box you are plugging into you may have to navigate to the sound set-up.

Noise cancelling microphone

What this mean is that the headset microphone is one directional picking up sound from your mouth rather than fuzzy clutter from elsewhere.

In-line mute
Most of the best models have a volume control and mute button on the cord between the head set and the box you plugged into. That means you can de-activate the microphone when not needed.

Stereo sound

A few headphones are mono. That’s fine if you are only using the headset to make VoIP phone calls or for Skype.

If you want a headphone/mike combination to use on all your multi-media activity you’ll definitely want stereo sound.

Comfortable, adjustable headphones/microphone

The best models for an immersive experience and to avoid other sounds leaking in are the over the ear models. You can adjust these for width and also depth to get a comfortable fit.

A few of the cheaper models are on ear types. And one (the XYZ) rests on your neck.

Microphones can generally be bent towards/away from your mouth, although a few have a slide extension. On more expensive headsets the mike can also be rotated up/down. That way you can find the right position for an acceptable, pop free, talk. You can also stow the mic out of the way when muted and not in use.

USB and/or 3.5mm jack connection

Some models have either a USB connection or a 3.5mm jack connection. A few require both.

If a model has 2 3.4mm jacks this allows the user to set-up for sound or chat or sound AND chat.

Compatible with PCs, Macs, Tablets & Games Consoles, too

Providing the boxes you want to connect to have either a USB and/or 3.5mm jack point(s) you will be able to port the majority of these headsets across devices.

Compare the Best PC Headsets Easily Side by Side

You can review and compare the best PC headsets at a glance here.
Which computer headphone & microphone rig is best? Which comes with the ability to switch off (mute) & stow the microphone? And which can you use across platforms: Skype, PC (or Mac), Laptops, Tablets, Wii, Xbox and PS3 (or PS4)?

What you review here are the user nominated, top Skype and gaming headsets in 2013.

So, which headphone & mike combination is the best?

Guide to Using Our Computer Headset Comparison Table 2013 UK

Overall Users’ Satisfaction Rating
The key question we asked survey responders was this: “You’ve been using your PC headset for six weeks or more at home or in your business.

Given your experience to date, how would you rate your headphone/microphone overall on a scale of 1 (low) to 10 (high)? Think about the initial set-up, sound clarity when listening, ease in controlling the microphone, durability of construction, comfort and value for money”.

We then took all these ratings for a given model and found an Overall Users' Satisfaction Rating per model.

A best buy PC headset will have a score of 8 or more. A score of 7 suggests a good design marred by poor reliability. A score of less than 7 suggests a product has both design and reliability faults. It’s probably a waste of your money.

Adjustable Headphones & Microphone
If you are going to wear headphones for any length of time, particularly over-the-ear models you need to be able to adjust the fit. And sometimes you won’t want the microphone so that should just push out of the way.

Compatibility with
The top models reviewed here are generally compatible with the following hardware:

• Windows PCs & Laptops
• Mac operating system
• Mac & Android Tablet computers
• PS3 and the Play Station 4
• Xbox, Xbox 360 & Xbox One
• Wii & Wii U consoles
• To listen you can also plug them in you TV & HiFi

Skype & Internet Chat
These head cans (and the mike) are also fit for VoIP phone calls, Skype calls and chat. You can also listen to MP3 music and the soundtrack of movies and video.

Controls & effects
Most of the models reviewed here have what’s called an inline mute. It’s a small block on the cord (near your chest) with which you can adjust the headphone & microphone volume and/or mute the microphone when not required.

Nearly all the best headphones offer Stereo reproduction, a few really intended for VoIP calling or Skype use, only, are monaural.

Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) is a software feedback system that either removes background noise from the headphones or being picked up from the microphone – sometimes both.

Connecting up
Some of the best PC headsets only offer a USB connection, which limits their use to PCs and consoles.

Many also have 1 or more 3.5mm jacks. That makes them additionally suitable for use with android and Mac tablets.

Generally, you want multiple connectors for gaming so you can experience the game, broadcast your chat through the microphone and hear your fellow players’ comments.

Plug and play
Customisable on screen

You can take these headsets straight out of the box and start listening/talking.

You can also customise their operation by navigating to the sound card controller on your PC, tablet or console.

PC/Console sound card powered
All these headsets draw their signal from the PC or console soundcard. They will deliver great stereo (but not HiFi quality if you are a music buff). They will also improve the sound experience of Laptops and tablets.

Compare the Best PC Headsets for a Best Buy

When you’ve found which PC headset is the best you’ll also want the best price.

Cheap PC Headsets are hereWith the help of Best Buys Compared UK price search service, we’ll guide you to the right on ear or over ear headset.

You’ll find the best PC headphones have digital clarity and the same is true of the microphones (you won’t sound like you are at the bottom of a goldfish bowl).

So, whether you want to talk to distant family via a VoIP call, chat with friends on Skype, play on-line, multi-player games, listen to music or chill out with a film or internet TV, there’s a corded PC earphone and microphone combo for you.

With the right computer or console head-cans you can plug in and play (or listen to audio) across Windows PCs, the Mac operating system, Android tablets, the Wii, Xbox and Play Station series.

Thank you for reviewing our UK 2013 which is the best PC headset? comparison table.
